About Indie & Guide

Indie on this site is a label about who made the game, not about how it plays, and that is why the list is so mixed. A college comedy sits beside a space-crew adventure, and a kingdom-management game sits beside a memory-loss drama. Nearly all of them are adult titles built around a male or female lead who steers events through menus. If you want the closest thing to a shared template, College Kings 2, Episode 1 is a good reference, with its campus setting, episodic release and branching social choices, though plenty of its neighbours go in other directions.

Choice-driven, but in different ways

The tags that repeat most are Story Rich, Choices Matter, Choose Your Own Adventure and Visual Novel, each on a few games. Read together, they say that most of this list is about reading and deciding rather than reflexes. Yet the decisions are not all the same kind. Inside Jennifer closes off routes as you go, so one choice can lock out a whole thread of scenes. Sovereign Tower turns choice into management, sending knights on quests where your judgement decides success or disaster, and it also lets you rewind time.

A few entries lean toward Action-Adventure or Exploration, and a few are 3D. Artemis: Book One carries an Action label, but its premise is about a programmer rebuilding a life after a business betrayal, so expect story first.

Settings that range far from campus

College and university life is one strand, seen in College Kings 2 and Law School, where a first-year student handles study, relationships and the step into adulthood. The rest of the list travels. Tales From The Unending Void follows a minor noble and his crew smuggling cargo across a human-ruled stretch of space. Chasing Sunsets moves from the Boston suburbs to Russia, Sicily, Tunisia and an invented island nation, which makes it more of a globe-trotting drama than a school story.

Tone varies just as much. My New Memories starts in a hospital bed with an amnesiac protagonist and a wife in a coma, and it is still in Early Access. Several others are episodic or seasonal, so a title ending at Episode 1 or Season 1 may be only the opening part of a longer story.

Builds and languages

Windows is covered by nearly every game, and Linux and macOS builds exist for most. About half have an Android APK, which matters if you plan to play on a phone. English is near universal, with Simplified Chinese and Russian each available for about half, and French and Brazilian Portuguese for some.

Because Free to Play shows up on a few titles, some of these are a low-risk way to test an indie developer's style before committing to a long series. Pick by the structure you like, whether that is a route-locking story, a management loop or a long episodic drama, rather than by the genre label alone.
